Hi folks, I would appreciate some advice. I've read through the faqs and several of the general "Is HN worth getting" threads, but would like some guidance on some very specific issues.

My wife and I currently run a home-based business, most of which is done online. We are in a city running on DSL, but contemplating a move to the country a few miles outside of town. Satellite is the only option for hi-speed Internet. There are major financial and personal benefits to moving out of town. It's a no-brainer of a move except that our income depends almost entirely on reliable Internet access and I have no personal experience with satellite ISPs. I would love to hear from anyone in a similar situation or who uses some of the same services we do. Also, if there seems to be something I'm overlooking here, please let me know.

Common programs/sites we need to use:

Retail website with mysql database (hosted off site), just need a web browser to interact with it
Printing UPS, FedEx and USPS Postage through online services
A blog powered by Wordpress (also hosted off site)
Gmail
eBay (buying and selling)
PayPal
FTP uploading/downloading

For the business, we currently use 200MB to 400MB per day (Mon-Fri) in bandwidth. I know we would need to seriously curtail our weekday personal Internet use to make this work, but that's a sacrifice we're willing to make.

The Elite plan through HN would be the plan I'm most interested in, though I would also be curious about the costs and differences of the "Business" plans they offer (but provide no details about on their website) if anyone has one.

We would probably also use a secondary ISP as backup/overflow, either dial-up or an EVDO subscription. The only reason EVDO isn't acceptable as primary service is the even more limited usage caps.

Oh, and is it possible to have two different Satellite services on the same property? Say HN and Wildblue? I didn't know if the companies would balk at that if the installer came out and saw one already installed. That could be a cheaper overflow solution in the future if we needed it.

We're located in the Kansas City metro area if geography matters.

Okay, I know this is a ton to throw out in one post, but I will appreciate any information people have. Thanks!

I have been having this issue for the last 4 months. Before this, I've had very few problems with Comcast, if this is even a problem with them.

I live in Hartland, Michigan.

I am having intermittent connection issues as far as using the internet, but I am still able to use my VoIP (Vonage) most of the time. At first I was sure it was on Vonage's end and so did they. They sent a new router but nothing changed. Tried bypassing the router for two days, and still had problems. A Comcast tech came out and replaced the modem. He also said that from his readings, I was getting too strong of a signal, and he put a splitter on the line. No change. numerous calls back to Comcast had me changing numerous different settings on the computer. No change. My hard drive was acting up for a while anyway, so I replaced it, and a new install of Windows XP. No change.

The problem seems to happen at semi-regular times. Quite a bit from about 8:00 pm Eastern time to 9:00 or so, and almost everyday like clockwork at exactly 10:30 am Eastern.

My modem is Scientific Atlanta DPC2100
Software version v2.0.2r1256-060303

The only router I have is the Vonage router, model VDV21-VD.

I don't run a firewall or anti-virus software.

I don't have a speed issue when I am able to get a connection.

When I have the issue, I get a blinking PC light, steady cable and power light, the other two are dark.

I can't post signal levels or log entries, as my modem tells me 'This feature has not been enabled in your cable modem' for both options.

The cable comes direct from the box to my PC, less than 10 ft between them. Other than the splitter, nothing between them.

The only thing that comes to mind that changes with my service when this started to occur was my service plan went from a straight internet only package, to one they offered called 'Keep the dish' - lower rate, plus basic digital cable. Would a change in plan change the feed to cause this? I've asked nearly each time I've called Comcast and they have said no. Could anyone help steer me the right way? Thanks!

It all began with my son killing my DSL connection. Between his new X-Box the videos and mp3 downloads it seemed like I was sharing my meager 1.5 connection with the entire block and if I wanted that I would have Comcast come out here and get me connected. So the decision was made he would have and pay for his own DSL connection and the lowest cost way of doing that was Stand Alone FastAccess SAFA.

So on Wednesday I tried the waters of ordering SAFA by clicking on the link here http://bellsouth.com/consumer/inetsrvcs/index.html well that requires an address and since I already have DSL the ordering system wasn’t happy. Tried on-line chat and they requested I call 888-757-6500 where the order was entered without any problems and I was given a due date and a DN that would be my account number. Later in the day I tried to register the account and received an error stating the DN did not exist in the system so I forgot about it.

Was off work on Friday so I contacted sales again and they found the order had been processed but was held for an unknown reason on the DSL side of the house the rep told me he would check into it and call me back later in the afternoon I forgot about and so did he.

Around midday Saturday I again called sales and connected with a rather tenacious rep by the name of Debra Hansen she like the previous rep could not see why the order was road-blocked on the DSL side so she contacted them again and after literally after 44 minutes and coming back to be twice she requested my permission to disconnect and call me back once she had more information which I agreed to as this service is not a “priority one honey-do” and I had a few of them to get on to.

About an hour later the caller ID showed an incoming call from ATT and it was Ms. Hansen with billing conferenced in on the call. It turned out the FA side of the house had me blacklisted as a deadbeat who skipped town owning them a past due balance which I found to be rather humorous as my employer doesn’t allow me to do things like that and still collect a paycheck.

Billing requested permission to pull my records and SS number and after a short pause stated there are neither past due balances nor any collections against this subscriber and I am noting that on the account both reps apologized for the error and Ms. Hansen advised me should would be calling me back soon. Another hour later she called back and advised me the order had been processed I ran thru the registration process and confirmed it was and thanked her for the help.

I never expected the billing problem but thought being on IFITL would be the problem but it wasn’t. In the end not too bad it was less than an hour from order being corrected to being able to register the account and connect.

Old retired SXS Man would appreciate some guidance.
Fast Access dsl is now available to me and I switched over from dial up to ATT dsl lite.

I am using a Motorola 2210 modem that ATT provided to hook up my desk top PC which is Windows XP.

Now I would like to be able to use my lap top (Toshiba)vista as wireless. It's just sitting here now that I can't just plug it into a phone jack and use it.

Any suggestions on Equip. or Configuration will be appreciated.

So I got U-verse internet installed about a month ago. The speed and price are much better than Time Warner cable. But, I have been having a problem with my VOIP that I get from viatalk. Basically it is intermittent, half the time I turn on the phone I have no dial tone and half the time I do. ViaTalk suggested I put the VOIP box in the DMZ, which I did, but it did not help. ATT tech support is so far useless. First they wanted me to change the wireless channel thinking my problem was with my cordless phone and interference with wifi. When I told them that wasn't the problem and it was the VOIP box not getting a signal, they then wanted to transfer me to the phone department (it's not an ATT landline phone).

I'm wondering if my vdsl is just cutting in and out causing the voip problems. Attached is a screen shot the statistics page on the gateway, is there supposed to be this many errors?
